BTVI’s Department of Beauty Trades seeks to help meet this need by offering programmes which help students acquire skills across several trades in the beauty industry. From cosmetology to hair and nail care to barbering to esthetics, massage therapy and more, we prepare graduates who can freelance, start their own business, work in a salon or spa or as a sales representative. From esthetician to nail technologist, massage therapist to facial specialist, the opportunities in the beauty trades are endless!

Programmes
- Cosmetology
- Massage Therapy
The Cosmetology programme prepares students to enter the workforce as a beautician’s assistant. Using mannequins
and live models, students learn a variety of modalities, skills and techniques. In addition to learning about hair
and its chemical composition, students are introduced to hair styling techniques, braiding styles and basic hair
weaving. They learn the theory and application of hair colouring as well as the correct procedures for relaxers,
permanent waves and soft curl permanents. Students complete a practicum in which they acquire the practical
experience of working in and operating a beauty salon.
The programme in Massage Therapy prepares students to become successful practicing therapists. Students are
taught
the art and science of massage therapy and learn modalities such as hot stone therapy, reflexology and sports
massage. Emphasis is on the development of appropriate work ethics and the ability to communicate well and consult
with clients. Students develop the skills necessary to become confident and effective massage therapists and are
well prepared to enter this exciting field in today’s spa environment.

The Certificate in Barbering prepares students to enter the workforce as barber stylists. Using mannequins and
live
models, students develop barbering skills and techniques with a focus on current trends. They also develop razor
shaving techniques and learn to sterilise and sanitise implements. Emphasis is on the development of appropriate
barbering skills and work ethics.
The Certificate in Esthetics prepares students to enter the workforce as an esthetician’s assistant or cosmetics
salesperson. Students are introduced to the theory and application of esthetics. They learn about various facial
conditions, cleansing procedures and facial treatments including facial massages and masks with an emphasis on
skin
analysis and care. Students also learn hair removal techniques, waxing procedures and aromatherapy.
The Certificate in Nail Technology prepares students to enter the workforce as a manicurist/pedicurist or nail
technician. Students learn about nail care, nail disorders and diseases. They learn to perform manicures,
pedicures,
sculpting and nail artistry treatments in a laboratory setting with hands-on experience using appropriate
professional products, chemicals and equipment. They also learn to apply light-cured and no-light gel as an
alternative to artificial nails.
The Certificate in Natural Hair Styling teaches students to analyse, care for and maintain natural hair.
Additionally, students are introduced to various braiding styles, including styles with beads, and learn the
procedures for twisting and locking natural hair, proper lock maintenance and shampooing techniques. Students also
learn the techniques for two-strand twist extensions and the artificial lock using Afro Kinky hair, the natural
twist without extensions and blending techniques for applications to relaxed hair.
